Three Stone Hearth was founded in 2006 and is a Berkeley-based worker-owner cooperative that produces, packages and sells a weekly menu of healthy, nutrient-dense, home-style prepared foods for sale online (for pick-up or delivery) and in our Brick & Mortar store.

Fermentation Worker (Lead Brewer/Fermenter/Preserver) Position Overview

Three Stone Hearth is seeking a part-time or possibly full-time experienced Brewer/Fermenter/Preserver. The fermentation worker is accountable for brewing cultured beverages, making ferments and other preserved products. Products we offer regularly range from kombuchas and water kefirs to sauerkrauts, kimchis, pickles, pestos and cultured condiments, plus dehydrated products such as our granola and Paleo Crunch. 

The work involves hands-on production, administrative tasks to support production, preparing raw ingredients, practicing and maintaining food safety standards, keeping a good work pace, tracking ingredients for mise en place, executing recipes or tasks as needed, jarring and labeling products, keeping a clean work space, and overall fermentation area clean-up. You need to know your way around a SCOBY! We're looking for someone who's both organized and creative, with a passion for this area of culinary practice. Work includes:

 

  • Brewing of non-alcoholic fermented beverages in a consistent, streamlined process that creates a high quality and dependable product, including fulfilling weekly bottle needs.

  • Creating new beverages/ferments using seasonal and local ingredients when available.

  • Incorporating surplus ingredients into new or existing products to reduce waste.

  • Creating work plans to coordinate the production of the weekly beverage menu, ferment and brewing schedules, bottle needs, in coordination with fermentation worker schedules to create easy flow and increase productivity. 

  • Using past metrics to manage beverage inventory in order to supply enough drinks to customers while minimizing loss from overages. 

  • Working with product development, costing, and ingredient buying to ensure profitability while still having a good product.

  • Communicating (in concert with the main Customer Service role) with/responding to customers (who have questions about or requests for products).

  • Coordinating with Kitchen Production circle and Housemade Ingredients Buyer for ingredient needs.

  • Tasks could include coordinating fermentation workers schedules 

 

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Minimum one-year experience working in professional fermented food and non-alcoholic beverage production with emphasis on brewing. 

  • Food Handlers or Safe Serve Certification, upon hire.

  • Professional brewing/fermentation/preservation and knife handling skills. 

  • Experience working with whole, organic fruits and vegetables, sprouted grains, raw and cultured dairy preferred not required. 

  • Familiarity with principles of food sustainability, including principles of Weston A. Price Foundation, preferred, not required. 

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy

  • Highly organized; capacity to multitask, set priorities, and respond quickly to changing needs.

  • Co-operative experience is a plus!

Schedule

Schedule is 5 days per week (M-F) OR possibly 3 days (Wed, Thurs, Fri) depending on our current staffing.

Shifts: Monday & Tuesday is 8am – 4:30pm. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 7am - 3:30pm. (Some flexibility with start and end times.) 

Position starts mid-May.

Order Fulfillment Position Overview  

The Order Fulfiller's primary role is to ensure that all customer orders are filled and appropriately packaged for both deliveries and pick-ups, and that products are properly restocked and inventoried. This time-sensitive work requires a strong attention to detail, good teamwork and communications skills, and an ability to represent Three Stone Hearth when dealing with customers. Order Fulfillment/Delivery Packing/ Inventory tasks include:

  • Review weekly menu housemade and retail products. 

  • Ensure proper shelving, labeling, and organizing of products

  • Inventory packing materials to ensure adequate supplies for the week’s delivery needs 

  • Determine the packing priorities based on the specific day’s delivery route. 

  • Fulfill all delivery orders accurately and in a timely manner, packing items to maximize food safety and minimize breakage.

  • Communicate with Housemade and Retail Products Buyer regarding inventory issues and any fulfillment errors affecting inventory.

  • Fulfill all pickup orders accurately in a courteous and helpful manner.

  • Restock products as needed

  • Interact positively with customers.

  • Package unclaimed orders at the close of the weekly menu cycle.

  • Assist with the end of weekly sales cycle product inventory - moving and accurately counting/recording products and quantities.

  • Assist with receiving and shelving of products

  • Organize weekly order paperwork.

  • Maintain a clean, orderly work-space.

 

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Experience working in order fulfillment, retail, customer service, inventory preferred

  • ServSafe Food Handler’s Certification, upon hire.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Highly organized; capacity to multitask, set priorities, and respond quickly to changing needs.

  • Familiarity with principles of food sustainability, including principles of Weston A. Price Foundation (preferred, not required).

Three Stone Hearth is seeking a 32 hours per week Order Fulfillment/Delivery Order Packer.  Must be able to work Wednesdays 11:30 - 7:30pm, Thursdays and Fridays 9:30 - 6:00pm, and Saturdays 9:30 - 6:00pm.   Position starts mid-May.

Dishwasher Position Overview

Three Stone Hearth is seeking an experienced full-time Dishwasher. The Dishwasher is responsible for proper cleaning and storage of all dishware, cookware, kitchen tools and equipment, and packaging and delivery materials, as well as supporting the organization and maintenance of the facility to include sanitizing, bathrooms and floor cleaning. Tasks include maintaining the organization of cleaning materials and supplies, handling recycling, garbage and composting materials, and processing kitchen laundry. 

 

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

  • At least 6 months experience working in a commercial kitchen or equivalent, preferred.

  • Food Handler’s Certification upon hire.

  • Commitment to cleanliness, hygiene, safety and sanitation. 

  • Ability to safely use industrial dishwashing equipment. 

  • Good time management skills.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Highly organized; capacity to multitask, set priorities, and respond quickly to changing needs.

  • Co-operative experience is a plus!

Prep Cook Position Overview

Three Stone Hearth is seeking an experienced full-time or part-time Prep Cook. The Prep Cook participates in the production of our weekly menu and is accountable for preparing raw ingredients, keeping a clean workspace, practicing and maintaining food safety standards, keeping a good work pace, tracking ingredients for mise en place, assisting production cooks execute recipes, jarring and labeling products, and overall kitchen clean-up.  

 

Required Education, Experience and Skills

  • Preference for applicants with one-year experience working in a commercial kitchen or equivalent. 

  • Basic understanding of professional cooking and knife handling skills.
