Blue Ice Cod Liver Oil - Cinnamon Tingle Liquid

237 ml bottle

$41.19 +tax

Many of the great historical cultures had one sacred food which they relied on to ensure strong mind, body, and spirit: Fermented fish/fish liver oil. The Mighty Roman Soldier was given a daily ration of fermented fish oil. The Stoic Scandinavian Viking had a drum of fermenting cod livers outside the door of his home. Grandma always had a bottle of cod liver oil in the back cupboard. Nutrient assays, including vitamins A and D, for these fermented oils vary widely depending on methodology, lab and batch. Current science struggles to answer the questions we have on our sacred fermented foods. There are many naturally occurring metabolites and co-factors that make the issue of measuring natural nutrients difficult in the fermented oils. We do know that historical cultures liberally consumed these sacred foods to great benefit without today’s standardization of knowledge. Allergy Statement: This product is made from wild caught fish and may contain other seafood allergens such as shellfish.

Blue Ice Cod Liver Oil - Oslo Orange Liquid

237 ml bottle

$41.19 +tax

Blue Ice Fermented Cod Liver Oil in liquid form, flavored with organic orange and lemon oil. Cod Liver Oil is know to have high levels of the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, and very high levels of vitamin A and vitamin D. According to Blue Ice: "Fish oils have historically been fermented for extraction; back in the Roman empire days, Viking era and all the way up to the mid 1850’s. Rendering was introduced during the mid 1850’s as a more efficient fish liver processing method. The livers yielded a much higher total oil volume and the process could be accomplished in several hours rather than several months. What they did not understand is the effects that heat had on the nutrients; their science was not ready to address this question. As with all industrial models, the focus was on profitability, speed or turns and, marketability (taste)." Allergy Statement: This product is made from wild caught fish and may contain other seafood allergens such as shellfish.

Dr. Cowan's Garden Carrot Powder Miron Jar

4.2 oz Miron Jar (approx. 50 servings)

$40.00

Packed with nutritious beta carotene and fiber, carrots are well known as food for the skin, hair and eyes.

The popularity of carrots soared with the carrot-juice craze inaugurated by the famous natural-cancer doctor Max Gerson. Gerson’s theory was that carrot juice helped prevent cancer because of its high potassium content.   Although this idea might be part of the story, we now know that carrots are the unique source of a natural pesticide called falcarinol made by the carrot’s root hairs and stored in the carrot itself. Falcarinol has significant cancer prevention and treatment effects as demonstrated in a recent article in the journal Chemical Communications.*

Our Carrot Powder is made from locally sourced, organically grown orange carrots, which we gently steam and dehydrate at low heat.   Carrot Powder gives a subtle, sweet taste to any dish and can be enjoyed in stir-fries, deserts or soups.

Our favorite way to use it is as a thickener for chili and other stews.

 *Chem Commun (Camb) 2015 Nov 11; 51 (87) 15784-7

Inside this jar are approximately 50 servings! One teaspoon equals an average adult-size serving of the fresh vegetable. and one large carrot equals approximately one tablespoon of powder.

Ingredients: Organic carrots. Nothing else.

Dr. Cowan's Garden Horseradish Powder Miron Jar

71 grams Miron Jar

$25.00

Horseradish, a nutritional and medicinal standout, is a perennial in the brassicas family and is a close relative of wasabi. It has been considered a healing food since at least the time of Hippocrates, more than 2,000 years ago.

Traditionally, horseradish is paired with protein foods, especially meat and fish.   This pairing could have evolved because of its pungent taste and its strong ability to kill pathogenic organisms often found on meat in the days before refrigeration.   While the pathogen-killing part is not so relevant today, the culinary pairing of meat and horseradish is still a dynamic combination.

Horseradish has other well-documented medicinal benefits. The first is its effect on respiratory passages; it has been used as a food, an inhalation and added to compresses to help clear mucus from the sinus passages or lungs. Because of its high content of a plant chemical called sinigrin, a glucosinolate, horseradish not only can inhibit cells from becoming cancerous, it also can inhibit the metastasis of already formed cancer cells. These plant chemicals called glucosinolates are found in many brassicas plants, including broccoli sprouts and Brussels sprouts, but are particularly abundant in horseradish

Sprinkle on eggs, fish or any other protein-rich dish to easily incorporate this medicinal, hardy perennial vegetable into your diet. Our favorite way to use Horseradish Powder is to marinate steaks by dusting both sides with it and letting the steaks rest for a few hours before cooking. The strong enzymes in the horseradish help break down the meat fibers, making the final dish not only more flavorful but also more tender.

Ingredients: Organic horseradish. Nothing else.

Dr. Cowan's Garden Leek Powder

4.2 oz Miron Jar (approx. 50 servings)

$40.00

The most nutritious part of leeks, like all alliums, is their green shoots. The shoots are featured in this powder to enhance flavor, which is sweet and mildly onoin-y, and nutritional power. Like other members of the allium family, leeks are antimicrobial, help reduce inflammation and regulate lipid levels in the blood. Leeks contain important amounts of the flavonoid kaempferol, which has been shown to help protect blood vessel linings from damage. Leeks are also an excellent source of Vitamin K, which helps regulate the body’s inflammatory process, and they offer good amounts of manganese, Vitamin B6, copper, iron, folate, calcium, Vitamins C and E, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Inside this jar are approximately 50 servings! One teaspoon equals an average-size serving of the fresh vegetable. To use, sprinkle on salads, eggs, rice and quinoa, buttered popcorn, steamed or roasted vegetables, fish or chicken. Add to smoothies, soups, stews, pasta, spaghetti sauce – really, anything you enjoy eating! Try it sprinkled over buttered and baked sweet potatoes.

Ingredients: organic leeks.

Dr. Cowan's Garden Low Oxalate Greens Powder Miron Jar

4.2 oz Miron Jar (approx. 50 servings)

$45.00

Oxalates are found in the leaves of many plants. For some susceptible people, when excessive amounts of oxalates are ingested, they bind with calcium in the blood and cause both damaging inflammation and precipitation in the form of kidney stones. Lowering the oxalate intake in the diet is a way to prevent stone formation, reduce systemic inflammation and, in general, achieve better health.   The dilemma, however, is that a low-oxalate diet can lead to the avoidance of otherwise very beneficial foods, such as greens. That is why Dr. Cowan developed this Low-Oxalate Greens Powder.

After researching the oxalate content of various greens, three emerged as the tastiest and nutritious while significantly lower in oxalates than others. Locally sourced, organic lacinato kale, collard greens and mustard leaves offer the health benefits from regular consumption of green vegetables while reducing oxalate exposure.

Try Low-Oxalate Greens Powder folded into scrambled eggs or sprinkled liberally over soft-cooked eggs.

Oxalate analysis (according to testing done at the University of Wyoming): Soluble oxalate: 47.9 mg oxalate/100 g  (3.9 mg oxalate per tablespoon (8.1 grams)). Total oxalate: 950 mg oxalate/100 g   (77.0 mg oxalate per Tablespoon (8.1 grams)).

From Dr. Michael Liebman, professor of Human Nutrition at the University of Wyoming:

"Oxalate in foods can be divided into that which is water soluble and that which is insoluble in water. Total oxalate includes both soluble and insoluble oxalate.  There is quite a lot of evidence that soluble oxalate is better absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract that is insoluble oxalate, so a person who is sensitive to oxalates should be more concerned about the soluble oxalate (the vast majority of insoluble oxalate is probably not absorbed so is not an issue).  For this particular product, only a relatively small percentage of the total oxalate is soluble, so that is a positive."

Ingredients: organic lacinato ("dino") kale, mustard leaves, collard greens

Dr. Cowan's Garden Sea Vegetable Powder Miron Jar

71 grams Miron Jar

$25.00

Our Sea-Vegetables Powder is a blend of equal parts dulse, wakame and kelp, all harvested off the coast of Maine. They are certified organic and are thoroughly tested for any trace of contamination by such things as heavy metals and radiation. It has a more "oceanic" flavor than our mild Nori Powder, and it's packed with vital nutrients.

Dulse, a kind of red algae, has been used in Europe for at least 1,500 years, and there is a reference in a Chinese health manual from 600 BC about the necessity of feeding red dulse to the Chinese kings to insure their longevity.   Dulse is rich in such minerals as iodine for thyroid support, chromium for blood-sugar regulation and manganese for supporting healthy bone formation. It is also rich in valuable omega-3 fats and other fat-soluble carotenoids.

Wakame is used liberally in traditional Japanese cuisine as a flavoring in soup as it pairs well with miso. The most intriguing aspect of wakame is that it is rich in a chemical called fucoxanthin, which inhibits the accumulation of fat in cells, thereby preventing obesity. Its use as a safe and natural weight-loss aide is being studied. Because of the ability of fucoxanthin to inhibit the accumulation of fat, it also lowers the LDL levels in the blood.

Kelp is a rich source of fucoidan, which has an anti-inflammatory effect as well as stimulating apoptosis (programmed cell death) in cancer cells. In addition, kelp has been shown to lower the serum estradiol levels, the type of estrogen associated with breast and uterine cancer. Finally, kelp is rich in sodium alginate, which has been shown to reduce the absorption of radiation from the gut by 50 to 80 percent.

A delicious blend (with a stronger ocean taste than nori), our Sea-Vegetables Powder is easy to use in soups, sprinkled on eggs or as a flavor enhancer for any savory dish. Our favorite way to use our Sea-Vegetables Powder is added to bone-broth soup with eggs and fresh vegetables.

Ingredients: Wild-harvested dulse, wakame, kelp. Nothing else.

Dr. Cowan's Garden Three Beet Powder Miron Jar

6 oz Miron Jar (approx. 50 servings)

$50.00

Beets, called red carrots in Europe, are one of the undisputed stars of the vegetable world.  Research has identified three main medical uses for the common beet.  The first is as a liver/gallbladder tonic because of its abundance of betaine, a phytochemical that thins the bile, thereby allowing for better bile flow.  Beets have also been traditionally used to treat anemia, especially in children, because of their iron content.  And, finally, recent studies have shown that beet powder is as effective a blood-pressure medicine as conventional treatments, most likely because of the presence of nitric-oxide precursors found in the beetroot.

We use three varieties of beets (Detroit Red, Chiogga and Golden) to make our Three-Beet Powder. Because of its intense flavor and abundant nutrients, it can be used in any dish, from salads to desserts (especially with its traditional complement, chocolate).

Our favorite way to use Dr. Cowan’s Garden Three-Beet Powder is a teaspoon added to yogurt and a splash of maple syrup.

Inside this jar are approximately 50 servings!

Ingredients: Organic beets. Nothing else.

This trio makes a great host gift for Holiday parties! Alice Rosenthal, beekeeper and rescuer, likes to think of honey as in Forest Gump's famous line, "Local honey is like a box of chocolates - you never know what you might get". The beauty and surprise behind local wildflower honey is - you just don't know what you're gonna get. But one thing for sure - they are all going to taste great and different from each other. Alice of Golden Gate Neighborhood Honey, maintains slightly over 100 hives in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. The majority of maintained hives are from West Richmond, Upper Fruitvale, and North Oakland/South Berkeley. Most are wild honey that was harvested while rescuing and relocating honey bees in naturally occurring hives. The honey is processed differently when it is harvested from a wild environment. There are no frames to support the comb it must then be crushed (with hands) to liberate the honey. While harvesting the honey, small amounts of pollen and wax enter into the honey. Her efforts are helping our local bee populations happy and healthy.

Let's support her in keeping our local trees pollinated! These Jars are randomly picked form her many Wild harvests and make a great sampler of the huge varieties in flavor color and texture. The trios are random selections of three varieties: Hercules, Richmond Marina, El Sobrante, El Cerrito, Albany, Berkeley, Rockridge, Montclair, Fruitvale, Hayward, Claremont.
